Reduce Jumping on You
- When your pup is running toward you, say “yes” and toss the treat on the floor. If your aim is good, toss it in a way that she has to turn away from you to get it. My aim stinks, I’m happy when it doesn’t roll under the couch.
- After she finishes the treat, she’s going to run toward you again “yes” and treat.
- Behaviors are learned by repetition. If she can practice running toward you, getting a “yes” and treat several times each time you walk in the door, it will really start to get embedded in her furry little head.
- Mistakes happen. She’s going to land a jump on you. She’s been getting reinforced for jumping for some time. So the idea here would be to completely ignore the jumping dog. I recently noticed how hard this actually is!! Having absolutely no reaction to a dog that is jumping on you is so very hard. I find the only way to truly ignore the dog is to separate yourself from her, like behind a closed door. You can walk back out of the house or walk into a room and close the door. Close the door for just a second and come back out to try again. The dog will learn that her actions have consequences. She jumps and the person disappears!
- If you happen not to have snacks on you, you can toss a toy instead, or praise her while she’s coming to you and get down to her level for petting.
- Actually just for fun, call her to you when you guys are home and “yes” and snack when she comes to you. Rewarding her for coming it you, is always a good thing and it’s another chance to practice “not jumping”.
- She’s going to start looking for you to toss treats instead of running all the way to you. At this point, you can wait until she runs up to you and hand her the snack.
Reducing jumping on strangers
That is more challenging. First of all, as much fun as we think we are, strangers are just more exciting. If you meet them outside, that’s even more distracting. And of course, you can’t control what other people do, so let’s reward your puppy for behaviors you like.
- If you have time, shorten up the leash when you approach a stranger, so she is closer to you then the people. This will make her choice easier.
- Before trying this with strangers outside, teach her that “yes” means treat, and practice with yourself or friends inside the house.
- So anything she does that isn’t jumping on people can be rewarded: she looks at them, she takes a step toward them, she runs up to them, she sniffs them…anything that isn’t jumping deserves a “yes”.
- In this case it’s best to hand her the snack. This way she has to turn away from the people and return to you for the snack.
Reducing Leash Pulling
Turid Rugaas’s Method:
- When the leash gets tight, STOP! Say nothing!
- Make some kind of a sound or say a word (your choice here: click your tongue, pat your leg, “yes”).
- Turn and take a few steps in the opposite direction.
- When your dog catches up to you, give her a treat!
Secrets to success:
- Teach your dog that the sound you have chosen means a treat for coming to you at home. Literally stand next to your dog, make the sound and give the treat. Then stand a few steps away from the dog, make sound, dog steps toward you, give treat.
- Try Turid’s procedure in an “easy” place first. Maybe leash the dog and do this inside, or in your yard, or in an empty parking lot. The fewer distractions the better. Don’t try this at dusk if your neighborhood is full of deer (trust me, I’ve done it).
- Don’t worry about being 100% consistent. We all make mistakes. If you stop and change direction just a few times during the walk, it will start to reduce the pulling.
Teach Your Dog to Back Away from the Door
Safety first:
- Harness and leash on
- Latch the storm/screen door or use an interior door first
Phase 1:
- Walk up to the door
- If pup gets to the door first, say nothing and step away from the door
- When she follows you, praise her (maybe even give her a little snack)
- Repeat these steps 3 or 4 times and then do something else (you can even pick up the leash and take her outside)
Repeat this 3 or 4 times a day. After a few days or minutes, the pup will start letting you get to the door first.
Phase 2:
- Put your hand on the door knob
- If the pup gets in front of you (closer to the door than you are), say nothing and let go of the door knob.
- If she steps away from the door, put your hand on the door knob again. This is kind of fun game. She starts to see that if she wants you to open the door, she should be behind you.
- Repeat these steps 3 or 4 times and then do something else (you can even pick up the leash and take her outside)
Repeat this 3 or 4 times a day. After a few days or a few minutes, your pup will start backing away from the door when you put your hand on the knob.
Phase 3:
- You get to the door first and you are able to put you hand on the knob with the pup behind you. Now start to open the door just a crack.
- If the puppy runs toward the door, shut it. If she got really excited, you may have to walk away from the door.
- Repeat these steps 3 or 4 times and then do something else (you can even pick up the leash and take her outside)
Repeat this 3 or 4 times a day. Depending on how exiting the situation is, you may need to go back to phase 1. I mean, hey if her best friend is on the other side of that door, your pup is going to have a hard time letting you go to the door first.

Great blog post. The things i would like to bring up is that laptop memory should be purchased should your computer still can’t cope with that which you do with it. One can set up two good old ram boards having 1GB each, for example, but not certainly one of 1GB and one with 2GB. One should make sure the company’s documentation for the PC to be certain what type of storage is essential.
